Artist Statement
I think of my artwork as slivers of memories, wispy recollections of childhood, of the familiar revisited with the dreamy overtones of a fairy tale. Our memories often idealize the world we lived in when we were children - where the forest was beautiful and magical, where secret passageways were found in an overgrown field of vines, where a pile of wood found in an empty lot became a fort or a boat or a house complete with a table and chair.
It is to this sometimes forgotten part of ourselves my artwork speaks. It is a simpler time, a happy place, a universal part of each and every one of us. I am influenced by old movies, music from the twenties, books with yellowed pages and my own memories of fields and birds and carnivals.
I use a variety of techniques to accomplish the vintage, often faded nature of my work. I create on canvas and, most recently, on wood - I particularly enjoy the imperfections of the wood, the knotholes, the wood grain, the texture. All my work begins with photographs of the everyday simplicity we often overlook viewed through the sometimes distorted lens of memory. It is a place of blurred dreams, sunshine illuminating spring flowers, the silhouettes of birds on a telephone line. The result is timeless yet modern and fresh.... like looking at old photographs from your grandmother's attic or rummaging around through your own internal recollections of fleeting moments from your past.
